• A long flowing double coat, layered so it falls and parts rather than standing out in a puff
• A clear face — the coat shaped away from the eyes, the way owners actually keep them
• The short broad muzzle with an upward-set nose and the characteristic underbite
• Large dark round eyes, hand-set wide and forward-facing
• A plumed tail arched over the back, coat flowing over it

Shih Tzus were bred for centuries as companions and nothing else, and it shows — they tend to attach to one person completely. They live 10 to 16 years. A lot of these go to older owners, or are ordered by adult children for a parent who has just lost theirs and lives alone now.
