The detail that separates a real Shiba from a cartoon one is urajiro — the cream markings on the cheeks, throat, chest, and underside. It isn't a patch. It's a gradient that follows the contours of the face, and it has to be airbrushed by someone who knows where it stops.

• The tightly curled tail, sculpted to hold its curve over the back
• Small triangular ears tilted slightly forward, set on a broad skull
• The fox-like muzzle — narrower and more tapered than the Akita shape it's often confused with
• Dark triangular eyes, hand-set with the slightly upturned outer corners that give Shibas their expression
